What are the symptoms of COVID-19? The definitive guide for 2022

by Laura Alfonsin January 28, 2022

As the COVID-19 virus has adapted and evolved since spreading globally in 2020, each new variant that emerges presents its own distinct symptoms. It’s important to be up to date on the symptoms of Covid and each new variant. If you have any of these symptoms, the next step is to get tested for Covid.

In this article, we’ll outline the main Covid-19 variant symptoms, including new Covid strain symptoms, to help you identify if you should get tested for Covid infection.

What are the symptoms of COVID for all variants?

While the variants of Covid present differing symptoms, here is a comprehensive list of all the Covid symptoms to date:

- Fever
- Body aches
- Dry cough
- Runny nose
- Fatigue
- Chills
- Headache
- Sore throat
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Loss of taste and smell
- Diarrhea

If you have any of these Covid symptoms, the next step is to get a Covid test

Delta symptoms

First discovered in India in October of 2020, the Delta variant surged in the middle of 2021 and by September of 2021 was declared a “variant of concern” due to the high rate of transmission and the severity of the symptoms it presents in unvaccinated people.

Delta symptoms include:

  • - Headache
  • - Sore throat
  • - Runny nose
  • - Fever
  • - Loss of taste and smell

The Delta variant attacks the respiratory tract more aggressively than the other strains and the onset of symptoms after contracting it has also been quicker. It has also caused more severe illness in younger populations who had proven to be more resilient to previous strains, making it likewise more dangerous for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with existing respiratory and other health conditions.

      Omicron symptoms

First discovered in South Africa and reported to the World Health Organization on November 24, 2021, Omicron has also been categorized as a “variant of concern.” Though it has less severe symptoms, Omicron has the highest rate of transmission of any other Covid strain to date, including high re-infection rates for those who were infected with previous strains of Covid.

      Omicron symptoms include:

      - Headache
      - Fever
      - Cough
      - Sore throat
      - Muscle aches

Omicron does not cause loss of smell and taste as in other variants.

Omicron symptoms have been less severe in younger patients. Vulnerable groups such as the elderly, those with asthma and those who are immuno-compromised are most at risk for serious illness with Omicron.

          Flurona symptoms

While isolation measures curbed the flu season in 2021, the winter of 2022’s flu season has seen higher flu infections and more people have been presenting symptoms of both the flu and Covid. The condition has been dubbed Flurona, a coinfection of influenza and one of the strains of the coronavirus. This year’s dominant flu strain is H3N2.

The symptoms of Flurona (the combination of influenza and covid) are:

          - Fever
          - Cough
          - Chills
          - Sore throat
          - Body aches
          - Congestion and runny nose
          - Vomiting
          - Diarrhea

Since both Covid and influenza affect the respiratory system, the impact of Flurona is more severe for the elderly and those with obesity, compromised immunity, diabetes, asthma and lung disease.

How long does it take for COVID symptoms to appear?

Covid symptoms can appear within 2-14 days of infection, though some people who have Covid are asymptomatic. That’s why it’s important to get tested as soon as possible if you come into contact with someone with the virus so you can self-isolate and take measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

The incubation time for the flu is 2-4 days and the Delta variant’s average incubation period has been reported as four days with Omicron’s incubation period being reported as five days.

How to know when to get tested for COVID?

If you have been to a social gathering, come into contact with someone who has Covid or are presenting any of the first Covid symptoms outlined above, you should get tested for Covid.

Rapid antigen tests are the most accessible and fastest way to find out if you have Covid. Consisting of a cotton swab inserted into the nasal passages, rapid antigen tests give results within 30 minutes.

MyZone Health Antigen Test Kits for Covid have been authorized by Health Canada and are a reliable and practical way to get tested if you have Covid symptoms. Each box contains 20 tests.
